“Coping with Stress to Avoid Relapse-Meditation Exercise”

BY SANDRA MASHIHI

This free exercise, and dozens of others, were created for our book, Clueless: Coaching People Who Just Don’t Get It. You can learn more about Clueless by visiting our site or you can buy it from amazon.com today.

Purpose of Exercise: Meditation exercise to cope and manage stress.

How to Administer and Use this Exercise to Facilitate Behavior Change: Research at the Massechusetts General Hospital found that practicing meditation on a daily basis throughout a period of eight weeks resulted in a change in brain structure, particularly with areas of the brain that are associated with memory, self-awareness, empathy and stress ((Holzel, Carmody, Vangel, Congleton, Yerramsetti, Gard & Lazar, 2011)). This exercise will guide you through a step-by-step meditation exercise to help with minimizing and coping with stress, particularly as a way of preventing relapse with behavioral change efforts.
